Bangladesh braced for protests and fresh violence as Bangladesh authorities on Saturday hanged a top Islamist leader, the infamous Sohagpur Killer for overseeing a massacre during the nation's 1971 independence war against Pakistan.Bangladesh was today put on alert fearing a possible backlash to the execution of top Jamaat-e- Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman for 1971 war crimes as thousands of people took to streets to applaud the move, amid fundamentalists' call for resistance.

Muhammad Kamaruzzaman has been executed at 10.30pm Bangladesh time (1630 GMT).Thus,Bangladesh executed a senior Islamist politician who was convicted of committing crimes against humanity during the country's war of independence more than 40 years ago. Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, 62 years old, was hanged ..

Kamaruzzaman was found guilty in May 2013 of crimes against humanity by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal, a body set up by the ruling Awami League party in 2009 to investigate and prosecute crimes committed during the 1971 war.

Bangladesh Prime minister Mujib Kanya Begam Hasina Wajed faces the imminent threat for coup anytime.Every Bangladeshi secular and democratic face from anywhere has been included in the killing least. But Hasina has the political will which we miss in India since independence as the rule of law is still absent for almost seven decades. However, the victims of riots,Babri demolition,Sikh Genocide, Bhopal Gas Tragedies, Bihar killings,Gujarat Genocide,Marichjhapi have to have consolation to see that the war criminals are being hanged across the border.

Mind you,the initial trials that followed Bangladesh's independence four decades ago were halted after the assassination of Rahman, the then president, and most of his family members in a 1975 military coup. His daughter Hasina revived the process with the steelmade political will to ensure justice for the victims.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia confirmed bdnews24.com the 65-year-old was executed at Dhaka Central Jail at 10:01pm on Saturday.
People gathered at Shahbagh intersection burst into celebrations at the execution, shouting slogans and saying justice has finally been delivered.Kamaruzzaman's relatives at his ancestral home at Kumri Bajitkhila in Sherpur district's Sadar Upazila are prepared for his burial.
It should be noted that Political unrest and illiberal democratic environment in the country have dented private sector investment in recent months, said Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) yesterday. But Hasia did not care. She did not allow international intervention at the same time. The think-tank said sluggish reform activities, especially the institutional ones, have also hurt the confidence of the investors.

Death row war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman opted not to seek presidential clemency, state minister for home said."The Dhaka jail authorities asked him several times whether he would seek mercy from the president, and he replied in the negative," Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told The Daily Star. The revelation came hours after authorities of the Dhaka Central Jail, where the Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general was kept, asked his family to meet him in the jail. With Kamaruzzaman's decision not to seek clemency, the last hurdle for the authorities to execute his death sentence – awarded for his crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh's Liberation War in 1971 – was gone.
