"The Ministry had written several letters to OC asking for his ouster because of the cases in Enforcement Directorate and the last such communication was made on August 6. The Ministry was not happy that he was merely suspended," a source told PTI. The OC has finally acted on the instructions and given the marching orders to Darbari, who appeared before the Enforcement Directorate today in a probe over his alleged customs violations.
"According to an order from the OC, pending an inquiry by the ED into the case of alleged involvement of Darbari, who is the Joint Director General (PSUs, sponsorship and marketing), in the payment of an unreasonable amount to a British firm at the time of the QBR ceremony in London, his services are hereby terminated with immediate effect," the source said. "He will hand over all documents, papers and equipment to V K Saxena Additional DG (PSUs, Marketing and sponsorship)," he added.
According to OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi, Darbari oversaw the QBR preparations in London, which became the focal point of a corruption storm following revelations that a little-known UK-based firm A M Films was paid lakhs of pounds for its "services" during the event. Later, an e-mail from the Indian High Commission which Kalmadi made public to justify payments to AM Films also turned out to be doctored, forcing OC to launch a probe into the entire episode.
Although the OC probe report is yet to come out, the Sports Ministry had been demanding Darbari''s removal ever since his name figured in a customs violation case.
Tejaswini won two gold medals in the 2006 Melbourne CWG in the air rifle event. Unfortunately, the 50m rifle prone even is not included in the Olympic event. Hence, she won't get a chance to compete there.
Tejaswini Sawant scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to clinch gold at the World Shooting Championship when she won the 50m rifle prone event on Sunday, equalling the world record in the process.
The 29-year-old shot a score of 597/600 (100, 100, 100, 99, 99, 99), equalling the world record set by Russia's Marina Bobkova in 1998. Second-placed Joanna Ewa Nowakowska of Poland also shot a 597 but the Indian won the gold as she had more bull's-eye hits - 41.
Sawant, who some years ago had struggled to pay instalments for the rifle she had bought on loan from the Maharashtra State Rifle Association, can now put those days of hardship behind her. The Kolhapur shooter was signed by top weapons manufacturer, Walther, after she struck gold at the Munich event.
The gritty girl recalled how at one point financial constraints forced her to consider giving up shooting, but the strong support of her family, especially her father, kept her going.
"I dedicate this gold to my father," she said. Her father, Ravindra Sawant, a former Navy officer, passed away on February 23 when she was competing at the Commonwealth Championships here.
"I was shattered after hearing the news, but I could not leave the competition. I was part of the team and had I left, the team would not not have been able to participate," Tejaswini said. Her mother Sunita has played cricket and volleyball for the state.
Tejaswini's gold was India's fourth big moment at the quadrennial meet after the success of Gagan Narang (10m air rifle men) and Asher Noria (double trap men junior). In between, Hariom Singh bagged India's second Olympic berth in men's 50m rifle prone.
"After the disappointment in the 3 position event, I wanted to shoot my personal best score. It was my day today," Tejaswini told TOI from Munich before rushing to catch her return flight. "I was working hard for one-and-a-half years but it took time to get over the shock of my father's death and resume training."CWG scam: Enforcement Directorate to quiz Darbari
Suspended Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC) Joint Director General T S Darbari will appear before the Enforcement Directorate at 11.30 a.m. today and is expected to be quizzed over the financial irregularities case pertaining to the 2010 Games.
He, however, earlier claimed that he was not involved in the Queen's Baton Relay financial irregularities case and has become a victim of media campaign.
The Sports Ministry suspended Darbari, a close side of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi, after censure on Thursday.
The names of Darbari and CGOC Deputy Director General Sanjay Mohindroo figured in the investigations into alleged irregularites into services provided during the Queen's Baton Relay in London.
He was suspended along with Mohindroo after irregularities were revealed in payouts to a UK-based firm, which provided services such as car rentals during the Queen's Baton Relay launch in London.
Disappointed at not getting the coveted Khel Ratna, ace Indian shooter Gagan Narang on Sunday took a dig at its selection criteria, saying the country's highest sporting honour seems to be decided more on the basis of public and media perception than the athletes' performance.
The world number two Narang on Saturday became the first Indian to qualify for 2012 London Olympics after shooting a bronze in the 10 metre air rifle event in the 50th World Championship in Munich.
"I am very very disappointed over what happened to me. It was third time in a row. I think, Khel Ratna is just inclusion of the public perception and media perception.
"It was disheartening to know that I was in run for my achievement in 2009, I was in with a chance in 2008 also. But I would rather like my guns to talk and hope that the bronze medal opens up a few blind folds," Narang said.
In the final round in Munich, Narang held his nerves to shoot a score of 102 which helped him bag bronze in a strong field of 128 shooters.
The Indian lamented that even the world record could not fetch him the country's top sports award.
"I thought that I would get when I shot the world record and I am still the world record holder," said Narang.
National sports awards selection committee headed by P T Usha met on July 30 and decided to bestow the Khel Ratna award to ace shuttler Saina Nehwal.

Annoyed at being treated like a "Mr. Nobody" by the national federation, India's first and only individual Olympic gold medallistAbhinav Bindra is planning to quit shooting. ( Watch Video )
The 27-year-old world champion, who clinched the historic Olympic gold medal in the 10m air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Games, is tired of being at loggerheads with the National Rifles Association of India (NRAI).
Abhinav said he was frustrated with the NRAI's attitude towards him.
"There are days when I feel like throwing away my rifle. The whole thing started in July when the sports ministry intimated me that the NRAI wants to me to compete in trials for Commonwealth Championships, I came back in November only to be told by the NRAI that the trials have been postponed to January," said Abhinav, India's first individual Olympic gold medallist.
"Now I get to know that my name is not there in the team for the Commonwealth Championship in February. I am not upset that somebody else is getting a chance, I am only upset about the process. First they throw me out of the Commonwealth Games core group, then they deny me a contract with the sponsors and now I am not there in the Commonwealth Championship team," he added.
"NRAI's attitude surprises me. I have never said anything against NRAI. I am not saying that I don't want to be accountable. You can monitor my results. It's certainly frustrating and annoying to face such situations," Abhinav said.
"He is annoyed that his point of view is not being taken properly by the national body and he is being treated like a Mr. Nobody. He needs space to do his training and prepare himself for this year's Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games the way he prepared for the Olympics," Abhinav's father A S Bindra said in Chandigarh.
Abhinav has defied NRAI in the past as well, openly criticising its functioning, and the latest standoff has been provoked by the body's insistence on his presence at national level trials.
"He has been asked to undergo trials and he even agreed to it. He came all the way from Germany for some trials on December 18 but to his dismay, the trials were postponed. He has requested that he be exempted from such trials not once but twice. He can't be harassed like this," Bindra Senior said.
"His emotional state is very low. He is planning that if 'I am subjected to such harassment then it's better to quit then confront'," he added.
The NRAI, however, dismissed Abhinav's allegations and said the body never misinformed him about the trial schedule.
"We never told him that trials are on December 18. Actually, he never wants to come to trials in India," retorted NRAI secretary Rajiv Bhatia.
Abhinav's father said the only way out now is to allow the shooter to train the way he wants.
"If the country wants him to compete then the way out is to let him train. He is training with the support of the Sports Ministry. They know his every movement. His international scores should be considered for selection," he said.

I could have broken the world record: Tejaswini Sawant
Biju Babu Cyriac, TNN, Aug 9, 2010, 03.14am IST
BANGALORE: Tejaswini Sawant won the 50m rifle prone event at the World Shooting Championship, while equalling the world record.
Tejaswini said she could have broken the world record but nerves got the better of her in the last shot. "When I came to know that I would break the world record if I shoot 100, I became nervous. That affected my performance in the last shot in which I scored 99. But I am very happy to become the first Indian woman to win gold in a World Championship."
Before the historic feat, the Indian's best show came at the same range last year when she won the bronze medal in the World Cup. "Yes, this range is turning out to be my favourite," she said. However, the super show didn't get India another quota place for London Games as women's rifle prone event is not an Olympic event. Tejaswini won two gold medals in the 2006 Melbourne CWG in the air rifle event.
National coach Sunny Thomas said the Kolhapur shooter was the second to be signed by Walther at the meet after Gagan Narang. "Walther will now provide her with the rifle and spare parts and will also take care of the service," said Thomas, who signed on the contract on behalf of the National Rifle Association of India.
Recalling her entry into shooting, Tejaswini said she first took a gun when she was in the eighth standard. "It was in the National Cadet Corps that I got a chance to shoot and I did well. At the Kamala college in 1999, my first coach was late Jaysinh Rao Kusale," said the shooter who rose to rank of sergeant in NCC girls battalion.
Tejaswini's big break came in the Asian Air Championships held in Bangkok in 2005. The next year she made the Indian team for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games pipping the likes of Anjali Vedpathak and world record holder Suma Shirur and from there on, there was no looking back.

BANGALORE: Coming back from the brim of uncertainty after being denied the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna for the third time, world record holder Gagan Narang once again proved he is a true 'ratna' as he bagged the bronze medal in men's 10m air rifle in the World Shooting Championships in Munich on Saturday, overtaking some of the best in the business - including Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra.
Gagan's medal ensured India of a London Olympics quota place in the event, the first for the country for the 2012 Games.
Yet to recover from the shock news that he had lost out in the race for the Khel Ratna, Gagan said his first reaction was not to compete. "It was very, very disappointing. It is very unfair to treat a sportsperson like this. This is happening for the third time and first I thought I won't compete but then I'm no quitter and I thought I will let my rifle do the talking," Narang told TOI from Munich.
In 2009, Narang won a gold and bronze in World Cups and two gold medals in the shooting championship. This year he won the bronze in a World Cup and bagged six gold and two silver medals in the Commonwealth Shooting championships. For the last two years, he also holds the world record of 600/600.
"I talked to my coach (Stanislav Lapidus), Sunny sir and my friends - it was they who helped me change my mood," he said.
National coach Sunny Thomas said he was very worried about Gagan. "He didn't start for long. he started firing after others fired some 25 rounds. He would hold the gun take aim but wouldn't shoot. I was getting nervous as I have never seem him like that," Thomas said. Each shooter gets only 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete 60 rounds.
"He was so upset. Just five minutes before the match he came to me and said that he was feeling very low. 'I'm feeling sad as they have done injustice to me', Gagan said," Thomas added.
Commenting on his effort, Gagan said he was quite satisfied. "I faced a lot of problems in the last one month when I even broke my rifle. I didn't have a great final but it's okay," said Gagan. The Indian, ranked second in the world, shot 597 in the preliminary round and added 102 in the final to total 699 that put him in the third place behind Italian World No. 4 Niccollo Campriani 702.5 (599 + 103.5) and No. 5 Hungarian Peter Sidi 700.4 (599 + 101.4).
Narang's much anticipated clash with defending champion and Olympic gold medallist Bindra failed to materialise as Bindra failed to make the final. The Beijing winner only managed a below par score of 593 (99, 99, 100, 99, 98, 98) and settled for the 25th spot. "I thought we were the team to beat. But somehow he (Bindra) didn't click," said Gagan who was congratulated by Abhinav.
Narang was spot on in the preliminary round as he rattled up perfect 100s in the first three rounds. The Hyderabad marksman missed a shot each in the next three as he settled for 597/600. In the final, Gagan had a poor second shot of 9.4 but he rallied superbly to get into the medal bracket. The Indian, who was lying in sixth place at one stage, came up with a 10.0 in his last shot that put him 0.1 point ahead of Chinese Olympic silver medallist and World No. 1 Qinan Zhu.
The third Indian in the fray, Imran Hassan Khan, ended 49th with a total of 590. Gagan's superb show took India to fourth place in the team standings - with a total of 1780 points - behind China (1787 points), Russia (1787) and Italy (1782).

Washington, Aug 7 (IANS) India's Rohan Bopanna and Pakistan's Aisam Ul-Haq-Qureshi shocked second-seeded Americans Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 7-6(6), 7-5 to enter the semi-finals of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic here.
The Bryans' defeat Friday was their first here since 2003. The two had won three successive titles in 2005-2007 and had won a record-breaking 62nd team title in Los Angeles last week, where they had beaten Bopanna and Qureshi in the semi-finals.
The unseeded pair of Bopanna and Qureshi fired 17 aces to seal the match in 80 minutes. They converted one of the five break points to seal victory in the 12th game, as Mike finished with two double faults.
Bopanna and Qureshi will next play American Mardy Fish and Mark Knowles of the Bahamas. Fish and Knowles defeated Sweden's Simon Aspelin and Australian Paul Hanley 6-4, 7-5. They dropped just eight points on first serve.CWG scam: Kalmadi aide Darbari sacked from panel
