I have been eating what I believed to be 100% grass-fed and finished meat.
However, I have been investigating the grass-fed industry and have found some very disturbing facts.
Since 2002 the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) has been working to publish a series of standards for meat marketing claims that detailed the processes that farmers and ranchers must follow if they wanted to say that their meat was antibiotic-free, free range, hormone-free, and that differentiated claims of where an animal was raised verses where it was finished. There was a revision made in 2006 which addressed the feeding practices alone and did nothing to link the standard to animals raised on pasture. It would have allowed for animals to be raised in a feed lot, fed antibiotics and bovine growth hormones and bear the grass-fed label. The USDA received over 19,000 comments in opposition to the confinement issue. The AMS announced in 2006 that it would abandon this standard for one that would require cattle to be fed a diet of 99% grass in order to be considered grass fed . The new 99% grass fed standard was published in the federal register October 2007. This is a step forward and we give thanks to the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service for establishing a grass fed claim for ruminant livestock. However, we would have liked to see a stronger standard. Under this standard the use of artificial hormones, therapeutic and sub-therapeutic antibiotics are allowed. Excessive confinement practices are allowed under this standard and access to pasture are easily manipulated. There are other problems that have to be addressed. We are concerned that confusion on the part of consumers will increase under the existing standards.
High consumer interest in the potential health benefits of grass fed meats has created new market opportunities for farmers, ranchers, wholesalers, and retailers. If a goggled purveyor of grass fed beef doesn t prominently display the words grass finished beef on their web site, be sure that you look at the fine print, or call and ask them before you buy.
I have been buying my grass fed and finished beef locally in supermarkets and other food stores that advertise grass fed beef. I took this to mean that the beef was finished on grass only after weaning and fed no grain. Here is what I found. In one store they had a brochure from the ranch that the beef came from. It said that any supplemental feeding would be minimal and limited to NATURAL GRAINS and FORAGES. When I asked about this obvious flaw in their claim that the beef is grass fed and finished, they told me not to worry about what the brochure indicated because the ranch owner said that they don t feed the beeves grain. In other words trust them. This is a store with a great reputation, but trust me killed that reputation for me. I then went to the web site of a major chain of supermarkets that I had been buying supposed grass fed meat from. This is what I found 100% vegetarian fed: natural pasture grass, hay, AND WHOLE GRAINS. No GMO feeds are allowed. I printed their brochure and presented it to the manager of the meat department who threw up his hands perplexed. That finished me with the second store that was supplying me. I figured that if I couldn't t trust two national chains to supply me with grass fed and finished meat what chance do I have with on line companies that would ship me frozen meat. After all, I am playing their game with their rules in their Ball Park with their bat, ball, and glove. This became a dilemma fro me. I am sure that there are many legitimate sellers of grass fed and finished beef, but, at this point I have no idea how to authenticate that I am getting what I am paying for. Grass fed and finished beef in the cuts that I prefer are selling for $12.00 to $28.00 a pound. Not to get what I am paying for without its attendant health benefit is a crime as far as I am concerned. If I am not getting grass fed and finished beef while paying a high price for it from the stores that are advertising it, I might just as well buy it from Costco at $5.00 or $6.00 a pound.
Perplexed, I sat down with Dr. Tourgeman to see how we could overcome this problem. In addition to his being the medical director of EvMed Forum, I have the good fortune to have him as my personal physician. Interestingly we came up with a plan that we could follow until we can reliably and comfortably buy grass fed and finished beef, if ever. We have long ago decided that saturated fat is not a health problem. In fact we prefer it for its health benefits. The major problem we see in eating Costco meat is the excess omega 6 fatty acids that we would be ingesting. To overcome this we propose to eliminate foods with a high omega 6 from our daily intake. We will also supplement with high dose fish oil to supply us with additional necessary omega 3 fatty acids. That technique hopefully will bring our omega 6/3 ratio to the desired and healthful 3:1. We will also test our ratio for omega 6/3 fatty acids regularly to maintain and insure a healthy level. There are several tests to do this that are not very costly. In any event it will be cost effective taking into consideration the savings gained by the low cost Costco beef. This scenario is rudimentary and will be refined as we go forward.
This experiment is also interesting, because, as we develop this program the health of the majority of the population that can t afford grass-fed beef could vastly improve by eliminating the dangers of the inflammatory diseases of the metabolic syndrome brought on by high omega 6 fatty acids found in most of the meat that is produced today. So, here I go once again using my body for a grand experiment, but, only under the watchful eye of my doctor. If you decide to do this, please be prudent and do so only under the supervision of your doctor. Stay tuned as we will be reporting our progress.
