 Article of the Month:

A Low Down On the High Up

                        The Exam

The Respect and recognition associated with IAS has most of us dreaming to crack the UPSC's Civil Services Exams from time immemorial. No amount of corporate luring has been able to shift our focus from the historical Civil services. Civil services exams comprise of a preliminary exam with two papers General studies and an Optional and a main exam with nine papers followed by and interview.

                        Preparation Strategy

Though very competitive the CSEs are easy if you are 100% focused. A few useful tips:

Read, read and read more. Extensive reading with focus on current affairs and general knowledge and mental ability for GS to build a good knowledge base is a good idea to start with.

Have a plan. To strategize and plan is probably the most crucial element in cracking the Civil Services. Let's say if you have planned for a period of 4 months then break it down to a smaller target for say each month, each week and each day.

Implementing the plan comes next. Make sure all that you have planned is actually implemented. Be consistent and systematic in your daily routine.Review progress on a regular basis to identify slacks.

And as clichéd as it may sound the golden rule is to analyze last 10 years question papers as this gives you a rough idea of the format and the kind of questions asked. The GS paper pertains to the subjects covered in our school syllabi with their proper application to a given environment. Anything relevant for a civil servant from planning and budgeting to human rights and electoral reforms may be included so an exhaustive all encompassing study is what one should aim for.

Practice marking the answer sheets in the allocated time to get initiated.

                Optional Subject

Interest, rather than the popularity or ability to score, should be the sole criteria for choosing the Optional Subject. Public administration has been so far the most popular choice for the CS aspirants as the syllabus is precise and easy to understand. Get overviews of the subject including Introduction to Public Administration, Basic concepts & Principles and Theories of Administration with a broad international outlook. Though the subject may seem very easy the question

normally are quite tricky and may not be that easy to answer so revision and mock papers are a must.

To get a good hang of the subject the same subject should be chosen for the prelims as well as the main paper
