Commonwealth Games sex trade warning

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games could see an increase in human trafficking and prostitution, MSPs have been warned.

Democracy Live: The Equal Opportunities Committee continues its inquiry into migration and trafficking

Holyrood's equal opportunities committee is being urged to take action to avoid women being brought to the city to be sexually exploited.

The warning comes in a submission from Glasgow Community and Safety Services.

One of its projects to help women trafficked or exploited has supported dozens of people in the past yea.

Glasgow Community and Safety Services (GCSS) manages the Trafficking Awareness Raising Alliance (Tara).

"Start Quote

There is concern that the Olympic Games in London and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow may increase the threat of human trafficking"

End Quote GCSS submission

Tara figures claimed that, in the year to March 2010, a total of 47 women were referred to them, ranging in age from 18 to 45.

Eleven women were trafficked to and exploited in Scotland, in areas including Aberdeen and Stranraer.

Five women were trafficked for domestic slavery and a further 14 women who had not been trafficked were raped, sexually assaulted, prostituted, had suffered domestic abuse or been forced into marriage.

The three most common nationalities were Nigerian, Brazilian and Chinese.

The GCSS submission states: "There is concern that the Olympic Games in London and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow may increase the threat of human trafficking into the UK and preventative measures need to be put in place now.

"There is evidence to suggest that trafficking and prostitution increases in places where large sporting events are being held, e.g. 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2006 World Cup in Germany."

Funds plea

The GCSS also said many women had poor experiences with the police, both overseas and in the UK, and were often reluctant to co-operate for fear that their families would be harmed.

Ann Hamilton, head of equalities and women's services at GCSS, will give evidence at Holyrood alongside John Watson, programme director for Amnesty International Scotland.

The Liberal Democrat MSP Robert Brown has also warned that construction workers working to prepare infrastructure for the games could increase the demand for prostitution.

He called for the Scottish government to set aside money to tackle sex trafficking last year.

With the Commonwealth Games less than three months away, authorities here are gearing up for a spurt in cases of prostitution and trafficking in women.

A host of non-government organisations, tour operators and police department are coordinating to keep tabs on the expected influx of sex workers.

The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), an umbrella body of over 1,500 hotels, tour operators and lifestyle services providers, have asked the Tourism Ministry to keep a check on such activities.

According to IATO president Vijay Thakur, "prostitutes from different foreign nations masquerading as tourists would book short tours to India. As it is difficult to restrict their entry at our end, we have recently asked Tourism Ministry to keep a check on them."

He disclosed that such sex workers come from countries like Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Chechnya and Kyrgyzstan besides others.

"There is a need to check such activities and hotel owners should be vigilant" he added.

Several NGOs too have warned the government that the Games, scheduled for October 3-14, may be seen as a big opportunity for prostitutes to make quick money.

"There is a huge possibility of trafficking in young girls from tribal areas in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka besides other states," said Rishikant, Convenor of an anti-trafficking NGO Shakti Vahini.

The NGO recently rescued young girls from Railway Stations and Inter State Bus Terminals (ISBTs). "These girls are sold to touts in different brothels of city's infamous G B Road area," said Rishikant.

According to latest Home Ministry data, about 3,600 cases related to immoral trafficking of women were registered by different state and Union Territory police forces in 2007.

To check entry of foreign sex workers, some NGOs have "urged Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and External Affairs Minister S M Krishna to ensure that visas are given only after checking HIV status of tourists.

It will help in checking prostitution and possible cases of STD (sexually-transmitted diseases)," said Khairati Lal Bhola, President, Bhartiya Patita Uddhar Sabha, an NGO working for the welfare of sex workers.

Sex, corruption scandals tarnish India's sport image

Allegations of sexual misconduct involving two national coaches exacerbated the problems engulfing Indian sport and had the head of the Olympic association running for cover this week at the launch of the Commonwealth Games tennis centre.

IOA president Suresh Kalmadi literally had to plead with Delhi's chief minister for safe passage on Monday to avoid a hoard of reporters demanding answers to questions of impropriety in national sports, including the sexual misconduct allegations against national field hockey and weightlifting coaches.

The New Delhi Commonwealth Games have been plagued by delays in the construction of infrastructure and venues, which should have been finished months ago for test events but instead, are just starting to come on line now, cutting it fine with competition set to commence on October 3.

The problems within hockey and weightlifting ranks in the last week have only sharpened the focus on trouble in Indian sports.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, the financial powerhouse in the international game, was already under investigation from federal tax authorities over perceived irregularities in the running of the immensely popular, multibillion dollar Indian Premier League.

The head of the IPL is under suspension and investigation by the BCCI and the tax regulators, but denies any wrongdoing.

As have the field hockey and weightlifting coaches, at the centre of controversies involving allegations relating to young, female athletes.

India's Sports Minister M.S. Gill said his ministry would investigate the allegations against the hockey and weightlifting coaches in a "professional and impartial way."

The ministry confirmed it was investigating allegations against M.K. Kaushik, who resigned as India's women's coach after player Ranjita Devi complained to Hockey India that he'd sexually harassed her during the recent Canada and China tours.

Hockey India had already referred the case to Delhi Police. Kaushik has threatened legal action against the national federation for holding the complaints against him as credible without verifying them.

The Sports Ministry also announced it was withdrawing weightlifting coach Ramesh Malhotra from a national training camp after Olympic bronze medallist Karnam Malleswari alleged that Malhotra had been sexually harassing athletes for a decade.

The weightlifting federation suspended Malhotra on the weekend pending an investigation led by IWF vice president Kumbasi Subramanya.

Malhotra denied he'd ever "misbehaved" with women weightlifters, telling the Press Trust of India that Malleswari's allegations were "false" and aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

The problems involving the coaches haven't kept Kalmadi out of the spotlight. The leading figure in the fight against a recent government move to impose age and term limits on national sports administrators, Kalmadi has reportedly been described as the "dirty face of Indian sports" by a candidate running for the Hockey India presidency.

Former India captain Pargat Singh, who will be contesting the hockey vote on Wednesday, accused Kalmadi of meddling in the running of national sports federations by promoting candidates who would follow his instructions or getting administrators bogged down in court.

Kalmadi has spent the last year defending New Delhi's preparations for the Commonwealth Games – the first major multi-sport event to be staged in India since the Asian Games in 1982 – insisting that the event will be a major success. Some of the leading athletes, including Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, have already indicated they won't be competing in Delhi, taking some gloss off the event.

Kalmadi's image took another hit at the R.K. Khanna Tennis Complex on Monday, when he found himself alone and confronted by a media pack trying to get his reaction to the comments from Pargat and news that the sports ministry had announced it was opening investigations into the hockey and weightlifting cases.

After offering no comment – "Nothing to say, please ... please ..." PTI reported that Kalmadi had to approach Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and ask for an escort out of the venue, explaining that the media was hounding him over Pargat's comments.

She made space in the official vehicle, and Kalmadi reportedly smiled at journalists and photographers as he left the stadium.

Pargat's allegations that Kalmadi was trying to manipulate the administration of hockey by endorsing an 83-year-old candidate as president came 48 hours before the election.

"He is a destroyer," Pargat was quoted as saying by PTI. "He talks of the Olympic movement but he has destroyed the Olympic institution. Such dirty people should be thrown out of sports."
India's sex-workers all set for Commonwealth Games

New Delhi, October 20:  India's prostitutes are laying their hotbeds to welcome guests storming in Delhi during Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Escort agencies are targeting foreign tourists, officials and visitors who will come to Delhi in 2010.

Businessmen from all quarters are eyeing good deals for making money during Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi in 2010. Likewise Escort Agencies from Punjab, Haryana and as far as Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore are bracing themselves up for their customers.

According to escort agents, Delhi will fall short of about 50% of escorts once the game rush starts. This number will be filled in by prostitutes from the above mentioned cities.

Escort agencies are already preparing the list of the A-list Indian and foreign sex-workers, who will be providing service to the European and American tourists, as they pay well.
