Cordially invites you for a public meeting on

Nepal: The Road Ahead?

                                                                             Date: May 6th 2010, Thursday

                                                                             Time: 3.00 p.m.

Speaker: Partha Chhetri, Politbureau member, UCPN (M)

                                                                             Chaired by: Prof. Randhir Singh
,Veteran Political Scientist

Venue: Press Club of India, Raisina Road, New Delhi

Nepal is passing through a critical juncture as the UCPN (M) has started an indefinite general strike from the May Day. On the other hand, Nepali government led by Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has refused to step down, although it has been consistently demanded by his own party members.

The peace agreement and the ensuing interim constitution promised that by 28 May the country would get a new constitution, which, for the first time, would be written by the people themselves. Now it is certain that the new constitution will not materialize by the deadline in this political deadlock. A provision in the interim constitution says the constitutional deadline could be extended by six months if two-thirds of the 601-member parliament agrees. However, the ruling parties cannot attain this goal unless the Maoists also agree. The question is, will they? In an increasingly turbulent situation, Prachanda has ruled out calling off the strike unless the PM Madhav Nepal resigns first.

Also there are questions concerning the role of India and other forces that is getting murkier in this fast developing situation. These and other questions need to be answered aptly at this juncture by someone who is actively involved in the history unfolding in Nepal.

INPSF cordially invites you for a special audience with Mr. Partha Chhetri, Politbureau member UCPN (M) on the present crisis in Nepal. After a formal orientation, house will be opened for an informal discussion and questions. The meeting would be chaired by the veteran political scientist Prof. Randhir Singh.
