                                                       A Sunny Day
                                                     by Jeanne Ames
As we set under the big pine trees watching the creek's sparkling
waters giggle and skip along merrily towards its mother river; we
talked of the olden days of our youth. How very long ago it seemed and
yet we could remember it still as if it was the 'here and now' and not
the 'there and then.' We could feel again the endless summer's sun
looking warmly down at us as we walk to our little town to cash in the
treasure we had found on our way.
There would be candy, sodas, and other summertime delights to trade
for the discarded bottles and cans we hunted for; junk to most but to
us little girls;  they were gems just waiting to be found. We always
found enough to get what we wanted in the little store with all its
delightful treats.  How wonderful those golden days of our youth were.
No worries just laughter and sunny days. It seemed at the time they
would never end.
The trees listened as we talked of our "olden days" and whispered
to each other far above us and shook their ancient heads. "How very
young these creatures are, with their wandering roots and hasty ways.
Why, they cannot stay in one place for even a moment. They refuse to
take root; not unlike wayward seeds, they too just float though life.
They should stay, set their roots, and grow reaching for the sky as we
do."
The little creek that we rested beside could hardly stay still long
enough to see us there beside it. Yet as it hurried away downstream it
quickly said in a frosty babbling voice "How very slow and dull these
creatures are. They lay like a lazy pond half asleep and daydreaming.
They should be hurrying along their way to see what new adventures lay
ahead. Why there is always something new to discover at every bend."
Then the wild flowers that crowded around us in the soft green
grass just lifted there little bright heads towards the sun and smile.
They were just happy to be in the 'here and now' along with the old
trees above them, playful creek running beside them, and us to tell
them stories. They thought that should be good enough for anyone and
they were right. What a beautiful summer day.
