1) BUCKINGHAM PALACE PROTEST AGAINST WAR PRESIDENT OBAMA

Without a trace of irony, President Barack Obama -- the
commander-in-chief of an empire which straddles the world, who
has more than doubled the troops in Afghanistan, who continues to
occupy Iraq, who has dramatically escalated a deadly drone war in
Pakistan and who is currently bombing Libya -- spoke last week of
the "moral force of non-violence" and said he "will not tolerate
aggression across borders". (SEE Choking on the Hypocrisy of
Obama's Hollow Platitudes: http://bit.ly/kBiFrl )

Obama is currently waging three wars which are opposed by the
majority of people in Britain and the United States -- in
Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya. He has already, in his first two
years in office, attacked six countries -- two more than George W
Bush.

This is why Stop the War, CND and other organisations have
organised an anti-war protest at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday 24
May, at 5.30pm, when Obama is on a state visit to Britain, with
bed and breakfast provided by the Queen.

The protest will call for the withdrawal of all troops from
Afghanistan, an immediate end to the bombing of Libya and freedom
for Palestine, which yet again was let down in Obama's speech
last week by rhetoric which far outstripped any indication that
he is going to do anything to stop Israel's countless violations
of international law.

2) AFGHANISTAN AND THE WAR ON TERROR TEN YEARS ON

Barack Obama's praise for "the moral force of non-violence"
certainly wasn't extended to include Afghanistan, where the war
has taken more lives this year -- both civilian and military,
with US fatalities sharply increased - since the invasion in
2001. A paltry draw down of around two per cent of the 100,000 US
troops, will momentarily dupe the mainstream media into saying
that Obama is keeping a promise to wind down the war.

In reality, the search is on for an exit strategy which avoids
the US having to admit that it has lost the longest war in its
history, and Obama's generals are telling him that this will mean
continuing the war beyond the 2015 deadline he has previously
announced.

This is the context for Stop the War's day conference on Saturday
11 June, titled Afghanistan and the War on Terror Ten Years On.
Speakers include Tariq Ali, Tony Benn, David Swanson from the USA
(author of War Is a Lie, published in the UK this month:
http://bit.ly/d5yg8z ), Mehdi Hasan from the New Statesman,
George Galloway and artist David Gentleman, creator of the now
legendary bloodspot posters and placards, which have become Stop
the War's trade mark over the past ten years.

3) CHAMPION OF MUSLIM WOMEN'S RIGHT TO WEAR FACE VEIL

An audience of around 400 filled the London Muslim Centre last
Saturday, to hear community leaders, campaigners, academics and
public figures from across Europe respond to the growing menace
of anti-Muslim hatred.

The conference was organised by the Enough Coalition, in which
Stop the War plays a leading role. Among those who addressed the
meeting was Kenza Drider, the French Muslim who was greeted as a
champion of women's rights for her defiance of the French law
banning the face veil, which has already seen her arrested twice.
(SEE video report of the conference, which includes interview
with Kenza Diver: http://bit.ly/kSGSEm )

Other speakers included Dr Robert Lambert from the European
Muslim Research Centre, Sabine Schiffer from Germany, Muhammed
Habibur-Rahman from the London Muslim Centre and veteran
campaigner Tony Benn.

No one in the meeting was left in any doubt as to the seriousness
of the threats facing Muslims across Europe, whether it be the
banning of the niqab in France and Belgium, the prohibition of
minarets in Switzerland or the growing victimisation of Muslims
in Britain.

A plan of action was drawn up by the conference, which includes:

* Establishing a European-wide network for research and
information sharing;
* A campaign to report and record Islamophobic incidents;
* Street protests to challenge Islamophobic statements by
politicians and in the media;
* A freedom ride from London to Paris in solidarity with French
women defying the niqab ban.

The conference issued a statement calling for a co-ordinated
stand against Islamophobia across the continent. The statement is
available on the Stop the War website, here:

4) RESISTANCE AND LIBERATION WITHIN THE ARAB WORLD

This day event organised by Friends of Lebanon, with speakers
including MPs Michel Samaha, Andy Love and Michael Connarty will
discuss:

*Reform as Resistance: emerging independence within the Arab
world;
* What is the role of the international community in light of a
growing quest for Arab autonomy?

WEDNESDAY, 25 MAY 2011, 6-8PM
HOGG LECTURE HALL, UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER,
35 MARYLEBONE ROAD, LONDON NW1 5LS

5) WHO'S AFRAID OF THE ARAB REVOLUTIONS?

An excellent film, written and produced by Tansy Hoskins, that
looks at the implications of the Arab Spring revolutions of 2011,
which have swept across the Middle East region and North Africa,
is now available to watch on the Stop the War website. The film
asks: where will this revolutionary wave end? who will be the
winners? who will be the losers? how will the West react? what
will be the impact on the Palestinian struggle for justice?
