Sorry for the cross posting if any. I wish to bring to your kind attention something that you are surely aware of already. This is the contempt proceedings that have been initiated by the Supreme Court of India against Mr. Prashant Bhushan, a lawyer of the Supreme Court of India, a human rights defender of national repute and a civil rights activist. The contempt proceedings were initiated against him in the context of his having spoken about corruption in the Supreme Court at the level of the Chief Justices of India. It is now his father , Mr. Shanti Bhushan , a very learned Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India, a jurist par excellence and a Former law Minister of India who ahs also come forward to file an impleading petition in the Supreme Court with an affidavit that ahs made very pungent observations that 8 among 16 of the Former Chief Justices of India were known to have been 'corrupt'. We are providing you some reading materials as attachment in case you need some more information. We from the Human Rights Defenders' Alert - India do consider Mr. Prashant Bhushan as an HRD and hence would like to gather country wide and international solidarity for him in this mission and hence have initiated an online petition in his support. We would greatly appreciate if your organization could kindly also offer us your solidarity considering the following beside other actions that you may deem fit, proper and appropriate. 1) That this on line signature campaign is circulated with a note from your organization globally asking people to extend their support to the same immediately; 2) That you may address communications in this regard to the relevant UN Special Rapporteurs ; 3) That you may also address separate letters to the Chief Justice of India directly expressing your deep concern at this state of affairs and request him to drop the contempt proceedings and instead to initiate an action to enquire into these allegations and come out with the truth. We have to achieve a large number of signatures for the Chief Justice of India to understand the urgency of the situation. Hence can I kindly request you to pass this to all your contacts and do ask them to do the same ? The online petition is available at http://www.petitiononline.com/CJI/petition.html Do treat this as urgent every endorsement is strength to us in this war against the judiciary that is corrupt. t is this solidarity that pays finally in such fights in this unjust system. We have to show where the power lies and the power actually lies in YOUR HANDS NOW. In solidarity, Henri Tiphagne National Convenor, Human Rights Defenders Alert - India
