Indian Premier League - IPL / Tobias Gourlay / 18 April 2010 / Leave a comment Free £25 Bet
In a tournament full of legends (and Brendon McCullum) Sachin Tendulkar has stood out above all others.
The semi-finalists will already have been decided by the time Kolkata play Mumbai on Monday, but no one should pass up an opportunity to see the Little Master at the top of his game, says Tobias Gourlay.
Venue & Conditions
The final group-stage game of IPL 2010 will be played at Eden Gardens, where the Kolkata Knight Riders have so far won four of six matches. The ground was used most recently on Sunday, when the pitch was slow and the Rajasthan Royals couldn't stop losing wickets. Compare that to a couple of weeks ago, when the home side's 200/3 wasn't enough to keep bottom-of-the-table Kings XI Punjab at bay.
Team News
Results went against Kolkata yesterday and they can't now qualify for the semi-finals. It's not clear what team they will select for their valedictory game. A couple of days ago, 18-year-old left-armer Jaidev Unadkat took three wickets in only his second IPL match and might reasonably expect another go on Monday. Otherwise, the selectors might make the foreign stars - Brendon McCullum, Chris Gayle, Shane Bond among them - earn their money or they might decide it would be profitable in a different way to give younger local players a chance.
If Mumbai give Lasith Malinga a chance to pick up the rock 'n' roll rhythm of T20 before their semi-final, they might well be at full strength. Malinga's had a few matches off recently, but Mumbai's other star performers have all stayed in the team.
Match Odds
Saturday's easy eight-wicket win over the Rajasthan Royals kept Kolkata's hopes of a semi-final place alive, but then they needed the Kings XI Punjab, who were already eliminated, to beat the Chennai Super Kings in Sunday's first match. Shaun Marsh, who wanted to show Australia what they will miss at next month's T20 World Cup, heaved 88* but MS Dhoni again showed himself to be one of the game's supreme finishers and rendered this match all but meaningless.
Mumbai qualified for the semi-finals a while ago and are now well used to meaningless matches. They have won the last two they have played and they are the best team in the tournament, so it's quite right that they're 1.73 favourites to win in Kolkata, where Sachin Tendulkar's presence in the team will ensure the Eden Gardens crowd isn't as hostile as it usually is to visitors.
Top Batsman
The whole world should be pleased that Tendulkar has overtaken Jacques Kallis, who was recently seen diddling 27 runs from 37 balls for Bangalore, as IPL 2010's leading run-scorer. If Tendulkar plays, he will, of course, lead the Top Mumbai Batsman market. He made 71* in the reverse fixture at the Brabourne Stadium, but the competition has warmed up now. Big-hitting Kieron Pollard and clean-hitting JP Duminy have both shown themselves capable of raising the tempo of the Little Master's symphonies.
The reverse fixture, almost a month ago, was Chris Gayle's first game of the tournament. His 75 wasn't enough for his team that day, but it did win him the Top Kolkata Batsman market. The West Indian's added only one more half-century since then, while another late arrival, Brendon McCullum, has barely accrued a half-century from four innings. Like his opening partner, Sourav Ganguly, the Kiwi has scored surprisingly slowly.
Highest Six Over Total
McCullum is widely remembered for his 158* in the first-ever IPL game a couple of years ago. This season, his strike rate is only 106. Ganguly has ambled along at 118. Because Tendulkar (SR 136) launches only ground assaults, it's counter-intuitive to back his team in the Highest Six Over Total market, but that should mean there'll be a generous odds-against price on Mumbai that will be worth thinking about, whoever his opening partner is (he's had a different one in each of the last four games).
Trivia
If you back Mumbai and the match is close, don't lose your nerve. They're the best in the league in the last six overs, scoring at more than 11 runs per over and conceding at 8 an over.

The knives are out against Lalit Modi. Some senior Indian cricket board officials who are at loggerheads with Modi over the autocratic way he is running the affairs of the Indian Premier League (IPL) are planning to ease him out, say well placed sources.
I am fortunate to have Friendship with Some Beautiful Girls in my youth but NONE of them could be my Sweet Heart as I had not the Status to have a Paramour. Being a Social Activist and Professional journalist for last Three Decades, now I enjoy the Privileged Entry in the Ruling Class Arena including Academia, Civil Society and Intelligentsia. I am younger than Shashi Tharur and Lalit Modi. I have also beautiful ladies in my friend circle but I have no IPL Fund to manage Seat equity for any one. I assume, many of us would feel Bad to be deprived to have a Feel of the Heaven. May be Lalu Prasad Yadav and Gurudas Dasgupta are feeling the same Pangs of EXPIRED Passions who suddenly EMERGED Loudspeakers to demand BAN on IPL Casino. For me it is Indian Prostitution League which like a Black Hole has Eaten the Indian Republic and Killed the Excluded Indigenous Aboriginal Communities as well as the Majority Mainstream Masses, the Tax Payers.
Meanwhile,With the government gearing up to trace the money flow into the Indian Premier League (IPL), its chief Lalit Modi said Monday that he was ready for any investigation. After the new IPL franchise Kochi has thrown up the murkier side of the auctioning of the city teams, leading to its 'mentor' and minister of state for external affairs Shashi Tharoor's exit from the council of ministers, and demands in parliament for a probe into the alleged betting and money-laundering in the Twenty20 tournament, Modi appears to have been boxed into a corner.
Times On line reports:
Lalit Modi's position as tsar of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was on a knife edge today as the creator and chief administrator of cricket's wealthiest tournament faced a Government probe into allegations of financial impropriety.
Modi is the subject of an in-depth investigation by India's tax authorities, according to a report in today's edition of The Economic Times that sent shock waves through the Indian Parliament this afternoon.
In a statement, Modi, who is in Dubai, denied wrong-doing and said he was preparing to take legal action against the paper.
However, the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that an investigation into the financial dealings of the IPL was already underway. "All aspects including sources of funding and routes through which the funds arrived would be looked into," he said. "Appropriate action as per law would be taken. No guilty or wrong-doer will be spared."
Putting the IPL through the tax scanner will be a mammoth task. The three-year-old competition has revolutionised the corporate face of cricket, raising $2 billion (about £1.3b) in TV rights money and $1.4 billion (£915m) through the sale of ten team franchises.
The best known team owners include India's richest man, Mukesh Ambani, and one of Bollywood's leading stars, Shahrukh Khan. But there is also a nexus of smaller investors whose dealings run through complex networks of shell companies and tax havens.
Meanwhile, officials for the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the body that owns the IPL, said its governing council was preparing to meet "at the earliest". Top of the agenda, according to insiders, will be the fate of Modi.
Opinion on whether he will survive is split. "If this isn't the end of Lalit Modi, nothing can touch him," Kadambari Murali, the sports editor of the Hindustan Times, said.
Several senior BCCI figures are said to be unhappy at how Modi runs the IPL - a competition he conceived and created - as a personal fiefdom.
He also has powerful enemies among the ranks of India's ruling Congress party. The current scandal was triggered when Modi revealed that the owners of Rendezvous World Sports, a consortium that had successfully bid $333 million (about £218m) for a new IPL franchise last month, included the girlfriend of a high-profile government minister.
Shashi Tharoor, the minister in question, counter-attacked by alleging that Modi was seeking to scupper Rendezvous' effort to establish an IPL side in the city of Kochi in the state of Kerala because he favoured a rival bidder.
On Sunday, Tharoor, who was close to Sonia Gandhi, the Congress supremo, was forced to resign from his ministerial position over the matter. "After sacrificing Tharoor, Congress will be after Modi's blood," one insider said.
Modi's most important political patron is Sharad Pawar, India's Agriculture Minister, who was chairman of the BCCI from 2005 to 2008 and is slated to head the ICC from next year.
Pawar is not a member of Congress, having defected to set up his own party in 1999. As a cabinet member he still exerts a powerful influence at the highest levels, however. If Modi survives, it will be at his behest, most onlookers believe.

Parliament resumed its normal business after days of turmoil over the IPL row that led to the resignation of Shashi Tharoor from the govt, but the opposition demanded a thorough probe into the alleged money laundering in the cash-rich IPL.
On the other hand, in a major development, a day after Shashi Tharoor was shown doors from the Union Cabinet, the Union Finance Ministry's report has given a clean chit to him in connection with the Kochi -IPL deal.
Tharoor resigned on Sunday night as the Minister of State for External Affairs.
The Income Tax (I-T) department has said Tharoor did not benefit from the Kochi -IPL deal.
The ministry said the I-T department is probing IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi's offshore money and trying to find out if stakeholders are fronts for Modi.
Meanwhile, a section of the media, has said that IT officials are probing Modi's involvement in black money and betting.
On social networking site Twitter, Modi said: 'Lots in media - speculations. welcome all investigation - ready to extend all cooperation.'
Following vocal demands from opposition parties, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the government had ordered parallel probes by virtually all its economic intelligence units to determine the source and use of funds by franchises of the IPL.
Earlier, Modi came out strongly and slammed the media for tarnishing his image.
'All charges are absolutely baseless, ill founded and motivated. I will initiate appropriate legal action against such defamatory and malicious campaign against me by a motivated section of media,' he said in a statement.

Meanwhile,
Sino-Indian war records ''top secret'', says govt!
The government today refused to make public an Army study on the 1962 war debacle with China, saying the internal report was "top secret" and "extremely sensitive". Defence Minister A K Antony told the Lok Sabha that the Henderson Brooks Report had "current operational value".Asked by Congress member Manish Tewari if the report would be made public, the minister replied in the negative. "Henderson Brooks Report is a TOP SECRET document, based on an internal study by the Indian Army, contents of which are not only extremely sensitive, but are of current operational value," Antony said in a written reply.
However, on the 1947 Indo-Pak war, the Defence Minister said the official historical record had been compiled and it was in the public domain since 1987. He also said the compilation and publication of other historical records had been taken up subsequently starting with the 1965 war.
However, his statement was silent on whether such an exercise for 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and the 1999 Kargil War too would be taken up.
Govt non-committal on JPC demand into IPL functioning |
Press Trust Of India / New Delhi April 19, 2010, 17:41 IST |
Government today said an investigation was being conducted into the functioning of IPL but remained non-committal on a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe demanded by non-UPA members who alleged that the tournament involved "betting" and "laundering of black money".
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told the Lok Sabha that investigation into the sources and routes of funding for the Twenty20 tournament had already begun and "no guilty or wrong-doer" would be spared.
His response came after Left parties, BJP, RJD, SP, JD(U) and BSP alleged that IPL involved "betting" and "laundering of black money" and asked the government to take control of it.
They welcomed the step of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to seek resignation of Tharoor over IPL allegations.
As soon as the House met for the day, Lalu Prasad (RJD), Mulayam Singh Yadav (SP) and Sharad Yadav (JD-U) were on their feet demanding that government ban the IPL which according to them has become a "betting and gambling ring".
Amid calls from Speaker Meira Kumar to allow the Question Hour, Sharad Yadav said, "The moot question is the IPL and not Tharoor." He was supported by Lalu Prasad.
Later in the Zero Hour, CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta raised the issue. He said he welcomed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's step of taking resignation of Tharoor but the main issue related to IPL.
Alleging that the game involves "laundering of black money" and "white-washing of black money", he said it was an "aberration" taking place "under the nose of Finance Ministry".
He criticised this form of 20-20 game, saying it was a "caricature" of cricket which was sending a wrong message to budding cricketers that they turn to it to earn money.
"Players are bought like vegetables. Betting is taking place openly. It is not cricket but organised gamble," Dasgupta alleged, adding that it involved huge amounts of money in a country which is poor in resources and has so many jobless people.
In the Rajya Sabha, the issue was raised by a JD(U) member who said funds of the IPL and BCCI should be confiscated.
Dasgupta said there were reports that a large amount of money for IPL was coming from Mauritius and "dubious sources" in Dubai and black money in Swiss banks was being laundered into white money through this form of cricket.
He demanded that IPL should be banned and JPC probe ordered to find out where the money is coming from.
Similar views were expressed by Deputy Leader of the Opposition Gopinath Munde, Lalu Prasad, Mulayam Singh, Sharad Yadav and BSP's Dara Singh Chauhan.
Munde said IPL was a "scam" involving black money.
He said the Prime Minister had promised action in 100 days on illegal money stashed in foreign banks but these funds were being routed through IPL.
"The government should find the source of the money. There should be a probe to ascertain who runs (the show)," Munde said.
He also said that while bar girls in Mumbai had been barred from performing in bars, cheer girls are allowed to perform publicly.
Prasad said while Tharoor was just an excuse, a high official of the IPL had acquired assets like a plane abroad.
The RJD chief thanked the Prime Minister for making Tharoor resign and said IPL should be banned and JPC ordered. He also said that cricket should be nationalised.
Mulayam Singh said cricket, a "foreign game", was being promoted while national games were being bad shape.
Sharad Yadav alleged that IPL was "vulgar" and a "den of vices, black money and loot".
In the Rajya Sabha, the issue was raised by JD(U) member Shivanand Tiwari who said funds of the IPL and BCCI should be confiscated.
"Players are being auctioned and the sport is being prostituted...," Tiwari said.
Quoting media reports, he said income tax authorities are said to have found evidence including the use of black money and match-fixing in the last four years against IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi.

Govt hits back, IPL funding to be probed
New Delhi: Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said a thorough probe had been ordered on the source and uses of funds by the franchises of Indian Premier League (IPL) and that no one guilty of wrongdoing will be spared.
"I can assure you that all aspects of IPL will be probed, inclusive of the sources of funding, how the funds were routed and invested," Mukhererjee told the Lok Sabha on Monday.
"I can assure the honourable members that no guilty or wrongdoer will be spared," he said on a day when an official communiqué from the Rashtrapati Bhavan said that President Pratibha Patil had accepted the resignation of Shashi Tharoor.
Meanwhile, the Cricket Board (BCCI) has rescheduled its Working Committee meeting from April 24 to May 2 where allegations against Lalit Modi and all other issues related to the Kochi franchise bid would come up for discussion.
The working committee meeting would be preceded by the Indian Premier League's Governing Council meeting to be held just after the event ends on April 25.
"All the allegations (against Modi) and other issues would be discussed in the Governing Council. The date would be announced soon," BCCI's Media and Finance Committee chairman Rajiv Shukla told reporters here.
"Working Committee meeting has been postponed because all things have to be discussed in the Governing Council meeting first. There is no point in having a Working Committee meeting before that," he added.
If some of Modi's opponents have their way they will attack him at the IPL governing council meeting on April 25 when he is expected to explain his side of the Kochi imbroglio.
'After what union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said about the IPL and seeing the MPs' anger, propriety demands that Modi should go, at least till he gets his name cleared,' a cricket board member told IANS not wanting to be named.
Following vocal demands from the opposition Left and other parties, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the government has ordered parallel probes by virtually all its economic intelligence units to determine the source and use of funds by franchises of the IPL and unearth possible tax evasions and flouting of rules.
'I can assure you that all aspects of IPL will be probed, inclusive of the sources of funding, how the funds were routed and invested,' Mukhererjee told the Lok Sabha.
The announcement came a day after Tharoor stepped down following allegations that he had misused his position to benefit his friend Dubai-based Sunanda Pushkar in the Kochi IPL franchise. Opposition MPs had demanded his sacking and threatened to stall parliament on the issue, which could have delayed a debate on the crucial financial bill and a vote on the budget.

Third umpire Congress declares Shashi Tharoor out
Shashi Tharoor was asked to resign as the Congress did not want to face an embarrassment in Parliament trying to defend a weak case. Moreover, the Congress core group felt that the govt had nothing to do with the IPL.
New Delhi: Finally it was a tweet that proved to be Shashi Tharoor's undoing. A week after IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi used the social networking site to make public little-known details of the IPL Kochi franchise ownership, including Tharoor's close friend Sunanda Pushkar's stake in it, the Minister of State, External Affairs, put in his papers on Sunday.
After the two-hour-long meeting of the Congress Core Group at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's residence had ended, Tharoor -- who had repeatedly and consistently protested his innocence -- drove to 7, Race Course Road, in a beacon-less vehicle and submitted his resignation. Late in the night, President Pratibha Patil said it had been accepted.
Tharoor had earlier offered to resign in the morning, when he had been summoned by the PM to explain his alleged role in the IPL Kochi controversy. Before the Core Group meeting in the evening, the PM and Congress president Sonia Gandhi had a one-on-one discussion over the explanation offered by the junior minister.
When the Core Group, comprising Singh, Sonia, her political secretary Ahmed Patel, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Defence Minister A K Antony met in the evening, there was unanimity about the need to sack Tharoor to prevent any further embarrassment to the government.
Shortly after the meeting, Tharoor called on the PM to submit his resignation letter, in which he stated that he was resigning to save any embarrassment to the government and the party.
The PM and Sonia discussed the issue once again before the PM accepted his resignation. Finally, the announcement was made by the PMO spokesperson in the night: "Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for External Affairs, has submitted his resignation from the Council of Ministers to the Prime Minister."
The PM is expected to make a statement in Parliament on the matter today.
The Core Group was understood to have concluded that Tharoor's argument that he had nothing to do Pushkar getting free equity in Rendezvous Sports World Ltd was untenable. Mukherjee and Antony, who had had at least three rounds of meeting with Tharoor, were said to have presented their findings about his interest in the IPL Kochi franchise.
External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, who is not part of the Congress Core Group, talked to the PM over the phone. Krishna, it is learnt, told him that while he didn't have the facts emerging out of the IT Department's findings, Tharoor's involvement in the IPL controversy had caused an embarrassment to the party.
Lalit Modi charged with 'Betting & Laundering'
19 Apr 2010, 0634 hrs IST,Rohini Singh & Sruthijith KK,ET Bureau NEW DELHI: 'Mr Lalit Modi has had a trail of failed ventures and defaults till four years back but has a lifestyle now that includes a private jet, a luxury yacht and a fleet of Mercedes S class and BMW cars all acquired in the last three years.' Thus opens a highly confidential and explosive report by the income-tax department that has been in the possession of the government for six months now but formed the basis of any action only on Thursday evening after a raging controversy over secret ownerships and sweetheart deals in the Indian Premier League, or IPL, stalled both houses of Parliament. ( Watch ) Highly-placed sources in the I-T department and the Congress party told ET that Mr Modi has been on the government radar for quite sometime. The alleged opaqueness with which he conducted the multi-billion dollar cricket tournament and the manner in which he took on home minister P Chidambaram in 2009 seem to have resulted in a detailed enquiry into his activities by the I-T department. The report, whose contents were described to ET reporters, paints a startling picture of the alleged activities of the controversial IPL commissioner, ranging from his manipulation of land deals in Rajasthan and the existence of a maze of shell companies and offshore entities used to route payments and equity stakes worth hundreds of crores of rupees. The report also makes the startling allegation that Mr Modi—through his associates—was 'involved' in 'betting', while "insider information and outcome fixing of IPL matches were hinted at". The six-month-old report, which I-T sleuths maintain is the basis of current investigations, is obviously referring to betting and insider information in the first two IPL tournaments, not the current one. In preparing the report, investigators seem to have accessed his email account, confidential conversations on a UK-registered cell phone number and regulatory filings from across the globe, from Mauritius to Ireland to the US. Some other Indian cell phone numbers have also been unearthed which the I-T sleuths claim Mr Modi "keeps changing". The report alleges that Mr Modi is "apparently deeply embroiled in both generation of black money, money laundering, betting in cricket (match fixing of certain IPL matches)".
An email sent to Lalit Modi remained unanswered on Sunday evening. His lawyer was also sent the same email. A number of his associates named in the report might come under the scanner as the investigation, which started with visits to Mr Modi's offices on Thursday evening, progresses through the coming weeks. Even though the report detailed the premises the tax department wanted to raid and sought permission to go ahead, political clearance was not granted until junior minister for external affairs Shashi Tharoor stepped into IPL's murky quicksand and with him dragged the government and the Congress party into one of the biggest scandals in recent times. "This is not just a Pandora's box but a Pandora's chest that has been opened," said a senior Congress leader who has knowledge of the report. "This will indict everyone," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity. When contacted about the contents of this report, the official spokesperson of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Shishir Jha, SMSed a terse 'no comment' to the ET reporter. | ||||||

The opposition alleged that Tharoor, who stepped down as minister of state for external affairs Sunday, was a proxy for Pushkar, who received sweat equity worth Rs.70 crore in the new IPL Kochi team - a charge both denied.
Tharoor's resignation silenced the opposition in targeting the Congress, but on Monday their call to ban the IPL cricket tournament grew louder.
Some MPs termed the IPL as 'gambling' in the name of cricket and alleged that black money stashed in foreign banks was invested in the IPL.
Communist Party of India (CPI) MP Gurudas Dasgupta said the matter did not stop with Tharoor resigning. 'We have not gone into the roots of IPL. the issue is laundering of money. '
Stressing that the shorter Twenty20 version of cricket was not in the interest of the sports, Dasgupta said: 'Black money is coming from Mauritius and Dubai through dubious sources and betting is going on openly... It is a only a game of gamble, an organised gamble.'
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad said the opposition wasn't targeting Tharoor but had demanded that 'murky IPL business of shame and glamour' be probed to know where the money comes from and where it goes.
Lalu Prasad alleged that a top IPL official has purchased a jet and has huge wealth.
Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said the 'foreign sport' was being wrongly promoted in the country at the cost of national games. Janata Dal-United president Sharad Yadav raised the same demand.
The finance minister then assured the house that that 'no guilty or wrong-doer will be spared'.
House proceedings went off smoothly Monday - Question Hour was held without any disruption, as was Zero Hour and business papers were also laid in the house.
The BCCI officials are unhappy that its fair name has been besmirched by the high-profile Modi who they say has become a law unto himself, running the IPL as a 'cosy independent island.'
Modi, who has been deputed by BCCI president Shashank Manohar to attend the ongoing International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting in Dubai, is expected to return late Monday night or Tuesday.
He and his supporters are taking the stand that the IPL general council has been created through a special resolution of the board's special general meeting and it has a term of five years. So, the general council has no powers to ask him to go.
'Modi is busy running the IPL, which is coming to the business end of the third edition. He will reply to all the allegations once he is free from his work,' an official close to him told IANS.
The governing council members are divided on the issue with a couple of them staying neutral. Most members look up to union minister and Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar, and he is, as of now, in Modi corner.
The board officials are livid with the Kochi happenings and they are finding ways to get rid of Modi. Strictly, he does not represent any state association in the board after being thrown out of the Rajasthan Cricket Association and he attends the board meetings as IPL chairman.
The top board officials are expected to meet IPL franchise owners in Mumbai Friday before the IPL general council meeting and Modi may be kept out of it.
The meeting is expected to decide the fate of Modi and he might even be asked to quit and if he resists taking refuge under technicalities, the board is preparing to call a special general meeting to oust him.
The board's working committee will meet on May 2 to initiate steps to remove Modi from the IPL. The two known opponents of Modi, BCCI President Shashank Manohar and secretary N. Srinivasan, may move a resolution that could either drastically reduce Modi's unbridled powers in the IPL, or could even get rid of him altogether.
The Friday meeting will threadbare discuss all the allegation levelled against Modi, the Kochi affair in particular.
'All the allegations against Modi and some other issues would be discussed in the governing council,' said Rajiv Shukla, the BCCI's media and finance committee chairman, in Delhi.
The governing council members are the four BCCI office-bearers, president, secretary N. Srinivasan, treasurer M.P. Pandove and joint secretary Sanjay Jagdale, former board president Inderjit Singh Bindra, union minister and president of Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association Farooq Abdullah, board vice-president and Delhi and District Cricket Association president Arun Jaitley, board vice-president and president of Baroda association Chirayu Amin, chairman of board's finance and media committee Rajiv Shukla and three former India captains Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri, besides Modi.
The IPL has turned out to be a major a money-spinner. The eight franchises, sold in a globally televised auction, fetched $640.9 million. The two new franchises added this year made it look like chicken feed as they went for $726.6 million. The television rights were sold for $1 billion for 10 years and this year YoutTube and multiplexes bought the rights to screen the matches live to take the earning to a mind-boggling $4.13 billion.

The fast paced Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament has its popularity quotient undented, even though several MPs Monday demanded it should be banned and probed following Shashi Tharoor's exit from the government Sunday night over his controversial link to the IPL Kochi franchise.
Most people, young and old alike, were strongly of the opinion that IPL should not be banned.
'IPL brings together Indian and international cricket players on the same platform and provides us with some great matches to enjoy. I agree that it's a commercial product, but instead of doing away with it, the corruption in the model should be curbed,' Kedarnath Jha, a school teacher, said.
Similarly, student Himanshu Sharma said: 'Just because there is a controversy surrounding two-three individuals, why should the entire IPL model be scrapped off? It's a great source of entertainment and we really enjoy it'.
Opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha Monday termed IPL as 'gambling' in the name of cricket and alleged that black money stashed in foreign banks was invested in it.
'The minister's resignation is not the issue. The issue is the IPL. We have not gone into the route. Issue is laundering of money. All this is happening under the nose of the government of India,' said Communist Party of India (CPI) MP Gurudas Dasgupta.
'Cricket is being maligned in the country. Wrong message is given to the budding cricketers to join the Twenty20 and earn crores. The IPL may be banned and a thorough probe ordered,' he said.
Similarly, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad said: 'Why target Tharoor only? The main culprit is this IPL. This is a gambling and betting business. There are bigwigs involved. The entire network should be probed'.
The demand from the opposition came after embattled Tharoor Sunday night stepped down over his links to the IPL Kochi franchise. He resigned after a weeklong drama after it was disclosed that his friend Sunanda Pushkar had received a sweat equity worth Rs.70 crore in the deal.
Reacting to the entire controversy, a number of people said that while it's important to have transparency and curb corruption, banning the IPL was no solution.
'IPL is a good source of entertainment - very fast paced, unlike the test and one day matches. It should definitely be probed into, so that the corruption can be curbed, but not banned!' said Anupama Dey, a student.
But there were a few voices that said the game model should be done away with.
